GDPR – Do you still need to update your data protection policies? You are not alone.

Although the deadline has passed, this does not mean you are out of the headlights. Companies are still at risk of massive penalties of £18million or four per cent of their global annual turnover, whichever is greater, if they don't update their data and privacy policies now.

The General Data Protection Regulation came into force on May 25th and was billed as the biggest shakeup of personal data privacy rules since the birth of the internet.

While it was aimed at curbing US tech giants like Facebook, sole traders such as plumbing and window cleaners and also SME’s could still face crippling fines if they fall foul of the law.

Since the launch of ForrestHR in Tunbridge Wells and London earlier this year, I have continued to advise these companies who are still unsure of what GDPR means for them and how to make sure they’re legally compliant, to get in touch. Much like doing homework or tax returns there are always people who get it done early and there’s a whole other group of people who do it late.

In the case of GDPR, it can look confusing and complicated and so it’s something that people may leave to do another day and before you know it, you’re way passed the deadline.

Understandably, many companies still remain unclear, which is no surprise as this is the biggest change in data protection for a generation.
